Safaa Erruas is a Moroccan artist born in1976 in Tétouan. She graduated from the INBA, Tetouan, in 1998. Safaa Erruas’s work involves careful thought about the corporeality of materials and gestures that we develop thought contact with them, in a general testing of folding, tearing and ruins, In doing this, she shifts the gaze of the technician or the sculptor towards a world of monochromatic micro-sensations wherein the smooth and the striated (to use deleuzian terminology) confront each other. Reversing the « minimalist » aesthetic.
Safaa Erruas’s sharp surfaces and lines puncured with holes cultivate a strong memory of the body, even thought it may be an absent body, a pain-racked body , or a landless body. Adept at creating an interplay of light and shadow, openness and occlusion, she is particulary attentive to the in-situ potentialities of the exhibition and artistic experience. Her razor blades, needles, and other metallic objects stand as warning signs and meditations on the silent wounds that we like to maintain in an unconscious dream.
Some of her exhibitions include : Un Instant avant le monde, MMVI Museum, Rabat, 2019 ; Deep Inside, solo show, Dominique Fiat Gallery, Paris, 2018 ; Partir/revenir, Galeri Flach, Konstakademien, Stockholm 2018 ; Landless Bodies, Casula Powerhouse Art Centre, Liverpool, Australia, 2018 ; Do it (in Arabic) Sharjah Arts Foundation, the Museum, 2017 ; El Iris de Lucy, Musée Rochechouard, France and CAAM, Canary Islands , 2017 ; MUSAC Museum Leon, Spain, 2016 ; Volumes fugitifs, MMVI Museum, Rabat, Morocco, 2016 ; Detras del muro, Havana Biennial, Cuba, 2015 ; Le Maroc contemporain, Institut du monde Arabe, Paris , 2014 ; The moon inside of me Installation, MoCada Museum, New York, 2008 ; Alexandria Biennial, 2008 ; Dak ‘Art Biennial 2006-2002 ; Zonder Title, The Muhka Museum, Antwerp, 2007 ; (JF-JH Individualité), Appartement 22 , Rabat, 2002 Safaa Erruas currently lives and works in Tetouan.
